The PUE Challenge

Whether operating an on-premises data center or a colocation facility, the challenge is similar: computing infrastructure consumes large amounts of electricity, making energy a major operating expense and an important factor in overall efficiency. Reducing unnecessary consumption is therefore a key priority.

Data center power efficiency is commonly measured using Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE):

PUE = Total facility energy ÷ IT equipment energy

The closer the PUE value is to 1.0, the greater the proportion of facility energy used directly by IT equipment. A higher PUE indicates greater consumption by supporting systems, such as cooling, and may highlight opportunities to improve energy efficiency.
