The Digital Substation
In recent years, transmission and distribution system operators have increasingly adopted digital communication and automation technologies. For legacy substations, this often involves upgrading or retrofitting existing equipment. New substations, by contrast, are increasingly designed around IEC 61850-based architectures from the outset.
A digital substation uses digital communication, intelligent electronic devices, and IEC 61850-based systems to integrate protection, control, monitoring, and measurement functions. By reducing reliance on conventional analog wiring and improving interoperability between devices, it supports faster response times, greater visibility, and more efficient substation operation.
IEC 61850
IEC 61850 is one of the key standards supporting digital substations. Developed specifically for power utility automation, it defines standardized data models and communication services that enable interoperability between intelligent electronic devices (IEDs).
SATEC has supported IEC 61850 for more than a decade, beginning with the PM180 power quality analyzer. Since then, IEC 61850 capabilities have been incorporated across a growing range of SATEC products, including both new platforms and selected existing product lines.
