Integrated Solution for Self-Generation Demand Response Programs

Dollars and Sense: Operate generators when incentive is high and generate substantial income

Demand response programs have been initiated as a means of providing customers with new options for managing their energy costs, and utilities with new options for assuring reliable supply at reasonable costs – even during peak demand periods.

Utilities initiated DR programs that offer an incentive for self generation at peak demand periods.

Proactive use of existing Generators can generate a substantial income for commercial and industrial energy customers.

Demand Response Generator Program

Demand-Response programs offer incentives for self-generation.

  • Day by Day program
  • With hourly incentive for KWh

The daily incentives are posted in the Utility website

Integrated Solution: Concept

  • PM172E high performance power and revenue meter with event/data logging capability attached per generator.
  • eXpertpower™ web service for advanced data management, analysis, and alarming functions on the basis of dynamic incentive programs for self-generation

Integrated Solution Offerings: Scheduling

eXpertpower™:

  • Reads daily incentives from utility site (illus. 1)
  • Calculates profitability for each hour (illus. 1).
  • Suggests a plan for operating the generators taking into account (illus. 2):
    • Profitability
    • Limitations due to Environmental caps set government
    • User defined rules
  • Allows User intervention to “fine-tune” the schedule (illus. 3).
  • Programs a set-point on device to operate the generator as per the schedule (illus. 3).

Integrated Solution Offerings: Follow-Up

  • Provides reports pertaining to de-facto generator usage according to various breakdowns (illus. 4-5):
    • Daily
    • Monthly
    • Yearly

Integrated Solution Offerings: More Features

  • Supports multiple incentive programs (illus. 6)
  • Allows retroactive updating of incentive in case of ad-hock operation (illus. 6)
  • Calculates Income and Savings accordingly (illus. 6)
  • Provides a Cohesive Energy Consumption Report that accounts for Energy Supplied from the Grid as well as Self- Generated Electricity (illus. 7)

Live Example

A generator Supplier provides a full range of self generation products and services. As part of their offering, they run a Performance Contracting program.

eXpertpower™ provides the platform for tens of generators included in the service. (illus. 8).

eXpertpower™ also supports the mechanical controls. Mechanical data is displayed alongside the electric information, providing a full, long distance, picture of the generator status (illus. 9).

eXpertpower™ provides an alarm infrastructure (via email and sms) that sends alerts when the controller detects anomalies (illus. 10):

  • Low Fuel
  • Maintenance time approaching
  • Rapid fuel consumption
